How does a solar and battery storage system work?
The solar energy system provides power to your home during the day and charges the batteries. Excess energy is exported to the utility grid. The utility will credit you for every kilowatt-hour exported to the grid.
-
Why would I want battery storage with my solar energy system?
Battery storage is the missing piece to the solar energy puzzle. Now, even when utility power is out for whatever reason, your battery storage system will provide power to your secured back up power board.
-
What is a Secured Back up Power Board?
Your secured back up power board is a subpanel consisting of the loads your battery storage system will provide electricity to during a power outage. These loads are predetermined before the battery system is installed.
-
What can be powered with a battery storage system?
The battery storage system can provide power to just about any appliance or outlet in the home. The question is for how long? Work with Sunnova and Generation Renewable – Guam to determine the best loads for optimum performance from your battery storage system.
-
How long can a home battery power my home during a power outage?
The amount of power available during a power outage is limited, depending on the appliances (loads) connected to the secured panel and, most importantly, your overall power usage during an outage. When charged 100%, the battery storage can give you about 10 hours of back up energy, based on expected usage. Those loads could include your refrigerator, freezer, a few lights and outlets.
-
For how many years does a home battery last?
LG Chem battery storage system have a life of 10 years. Sunnova is committed to replacing your battery storage system in year 10.
-
How much do I pay for the solar and battery storage system?
You will not pay the solar and battery storage system equipment or the installation of it. This is covered under your solar service agreement. You will only be charged $0.21 per kilowatt-hour for the energy the system produces.
-
Will I receive a bill from both the utility company and Sunnova?
Yes. You should expect to continue receiving a bill from the utility company for basic service and any power needs not supplied by your solar and battery system. Your Sunnova bill is for your solar service agreement payment.
-
Is there a maintenance or insurance cost for the battery storage system?
No. From the solar panels on the roof, to the inverter and battery storage system on your wall, our unmatched Sunnova Protect warranty covers all solar+battery storage system components, eliminating out-of-pocket expenses for system maintenance or equipment repairs or replacements, including labor and a 10-year roof warranty. Plus, you don’t have to worry about insuring your system because Sunnova has a 25-year peace of mind coverage.
-
Will I still get credit for solar energy I export to the grid through net metering?
Yes. Your battery storage system will not affect net metering. For every kilowatt-hour your system exports to the grid, you will be credited by the utility.
